A New Beginning for the BYUIA Blog

Hi everyone!

We're starting up this blog again for the purpose of getting our activities to a broader audience. We're excited to start having more regular activities.We would like to get your input on the new activities before we set them in stone. Here is the list of proposed activities:

Foolin' Around Provo Opening Night!

Tonight at 7 pm will be the opening reception for the Foolin' Around Provo Art Exhibit. It is part of the Provo Gallery Stroll, and we would love to have as many people as possible come and see everything downtown Provo has to offer (not just us).

As a reminder, the exhibit is located in Provo Town Square, off of center street and next to Comedy Sportz. Our exhibit is in a hallway inside next to Spicy Corea and Danbury's Barbershop. You should be able to find it pretty quickly.

BYU Students Win Society of Illustrators Student Competition!

The Society of Illustrators just announced their winners for this year's Student Scholarship competition. If you don't know what the SOI is just think of it as a the Screen Actors Guild for Illustrators. The Student Scholarship Competition is a way for the SOI to recognize up and coming talent.

This year we got two students in! The winners are:

Elisabeth Pulido: A Lack of Practice

Tyler Carter: Crisium

BYU did really well, especially since the competition this year was very steep. Although other schools had several pieces accepted, BYU has one of the highest ratios of winning entries to number of students in the program. We held our own against schools with 3,000+ art students.

4. As many entries as you want, $5 an entry. Checks only, put them on my (Kristin's) desk in F-455.

5. With your submissions we need "Your Name, Name of Piece, Name of Instructor* (If done in a class), Medium"
*If it's an out-of-class piece, just put the name of the professor who has influenced your aesthetic style or just put Richard Hull, as he is program director this year.

BYU Illustrators' Showcase 2011

This BYU Illustration department is putting on a great show for all you illustration students to show off your stuff! All illustration students (including pre-majors) are invited to enter.

Where: @ the Provo County Health and Justice Building.

This show is NOT juried. You frame it and we'll hang it.

All pieces need to be framed and have a wire hanger. If you don't know what that means you can email us--or use your google powers (there are lots of good tuts on the web).

Enter as many pieces as you want. In fact, the more the merrier! $2 hanging fee per piece. $1 fee for BYUIA members.

Entries are due this MONDAY, JANUARY 24. Drop off @ the studio (F-455 HFAC).

This art show will be part of the FRIDAY GALLERY STROLL that Provo holds every month! The opening for it is Feb 4, in the evening. So start inviting family and friends to join us for food, music, AND art! More details on that coming soon.

STUDENT COMPETITION 2010

Entries due on Monday, January 24th

Entry Specifications: 

72 DPI, RGB, JPEG at 500 pixels on its longest side, horizontal or vertical. 

In your email please specify the following:

Straight-Up Facts:

1. This is a competition that must be submitted through the illustration department, so email your submissions to this account,byuillustrators@gmail.com by January 24th, 2011.

2. The image to upload must be 500 pixels on its longest size (horizontal or vertical), 72DPI, and RGB format. This is pretty small, so it must be a quality image. SEND IT IN THE RIGHT FORMAT. Wrong format = no submission. 

3. Every entry is $5.00 (in the real world this is ridiculously cheap, especially for the quality of this competition), which must be made out to BYU with your submission. You can bring the checks to Kristin Gulledge, who is often in the BFA studio during the day.

4. The prizes range anywhere from $500.00 to thousands of dollars. If you are accepted, you get your work submitted in a magazine. This is a great opportunity for publicity and experience, so invest in your work and your future. Don't pass this one up!

5. Submit as many pieces as possible. They should be of good quality, but quantity greatly increases your chance of success in this competition. And they LOVE BYU students. We had 7 winners last year.

"Curiouser and Curiouser..." (Adam's art show)

My show featuring re-imaginings of Alice in Wonderland has one week left! It's going down Thursday (maybe Friday if I can finagle it) the 14th. If you haven't been down to Gallery 303 recently, please stop by before it's gone forever!

STUFF! Little pieces of it.

Hey Everyone! 

I hope your break was fantastic! Winter 2011 is going to be full of awesome Illustration opportunities, so buckle up!

Here are a few random teasers, with an intentional lack of information that is coming soon! (Not that we don't have the info, it's just that I don't want to have to break this e-mail up into chapters, cuz there's so much. Especially without pictures; that would just be cruel.)

1) The SOCIETY OF ILLUSTRATORS competition entries are due at the end of January! Be preparing pieces to submit. This is VERY important.

2) Next month, the BYU Illustration department has our very own ART SHOW at the County Health & Justice Building! Again, be thinking of  and preparing pieces to submit. These must be framed.

4) I saw on Twitter that Josh Cochran is looking for an intern this spring! He said to e-mail him if interested,mail@joshcochran.net. I say you should just talk to Bethanne, because she's great at getting students internships! 

5) There are some sweet deals going on at Dickblick.com, especially on canvases. Remember if you're in the club you already get 15% off of any non-sale item. Wha-chinggg!

6) For all of you in the BYU Illustrators' Association, our T-shirts are in!! More details coming soon.

7) Remember that $10,000 scholarship contest where all you do is make a little greeting card design? Yeah, those entries are due NEXT WEEK. January 15. $10,000 ...TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. Jus' sayin. 

So, we'll get info and prioritize what to send and get it out to you as soon as possible via e-mail. Be on the lookout!

Get it?? Thanks in icky text slang + the abridged version of Christmas = Thanxmas!!! I thought you did. You also probably noticed how conveniently it is right between the two other real holidays that were never made up, and you're probably wondering if Kevin was actually ever going to post all the Thanxmas details in list format. Well wonder NO MORE!!!

-Bring a white elephant gift thing. Preferably something art-ish, that you made. or not. either one works.

Did Someone Say... Christmas Party?!?!

This is a secret that only you and your friends and anyone else you know can hear:

There is going to be a Christmas Party soon!

Really soon, like December the 11th soon.

And it's not going to be just any party - it's a Thanksmas (between Thanksgiving and Christmas - copyright phrase from Kevin) party. And it's well documented that all Thanksmas parties are automatically guaranteed to be awesome. If you think of the awesome-est party in your imagination, and it got in a fight with this Thanksmas party, the Thanksmas party would win.  

Definitely.

Such a party consists of glorious and appetizing snack foods, pretty much the coolest people you'll ever meet, and...

Christmas Art!


This art will come from YOU, who has such creativity and talent that we know you're dying to do something with it all. Just bring a little doodle, sketch, or finished piece with you, maybe 4"x6" or something around that size, that has a Christmas theme.

The reason for the Christmas art?

Because we can. Also, because we're illustrators - that's just one of the cool things we do, right?

The details like the time and place will be posted later when we have more information.

T-Shirt Contest Entries!! Finally!

Hello BYUIA members! We finally have some beautiful options for your FREE T-SHIRT. Since we all like the democratic process (well, any Marxists out there?), we will have one or two voting sessions so YOU can choose what image represents us best in body and spirit! (Did you notice how I italicized spirit, to convey its abstract nature? Clever, eh?)


Here's what you do:
1) Be a BYUIA Member (e-mail us if you wanna be! byuillustrators@gmail.com)
2) Mosey on over to F-455 HFAC (BFA Studio)
3) Pick a piece of paper and write your NAME on it, along with your VOTE
4) Repeat step 3. (THAT'S RIGHT. YOU GET TWO VOTES!!!! so make 'em good)
5) Do all this before Saturday, Nov 20.

On Monday, Nov 22 and Tuesday Nov 23, check your e-mail and this blog because we will have our TOP THREE DESIGNS battling for the coveted club t-shirt design for this year. Then, you may E-MAIL ONE VOTE out of those final three.

what the T-SHIRT DEADLINE EXTENSION!?!?

yep. you guessed it, as the title of this post may have subtly hinted to your ever observant eyes - the t-shirt contest deadline has been extended.
what does this all mean??? duh. you know what this all means, so let's get down to business:

Tuesday, November 9TH. submissions must be in by midnight, because everything's more dramatic the darker gets.
there's been some confusion, some stress, and maybe some other stuff. this post is to here to squelch (cool word..) any of that. *ahem*

what this contest is all about: you're a club member - if you want, you make a shirt design for the club - if you win, your shirt design is mass produced for all the club members. pretty simple right? right.

so if you're one of those cool club members who is just dying to get in on this shirt designing action, but has no idea what to do... allow me to provide some helpful tips so that you can remain amongst the living:
-it would probably help if you did something..
-the design can be ANYTHING. for example: a cream cheese danish, Godzilla feeling kinda bad about all the stuff he did to Japan, a shiny tin can, an explosion, 4 explosions, sean connery's mother - beard and all... wait, what?
-if you NEED direction... start with putting the following combination of words/letters/and or numbers together "BYU-IA 2010-2011" ... or "BYU ILLUSTRATORS' ASSOCIATION" i'm not saying any of that NEEDS to be on the shirt... but it would definitely help identify what the shirt is all about. but seriously no need to worry about that part if you are indeed worrying at this very moment. just stop it. you're not doing yourself or anyone else any favors if you keep that up.

you get the idea. the cooler the shirt, the cooler a chance it has at winning. cool? cool.
as extra incentive, we'll be submitting the coolest shirts into other cool shirt contests via the information superhighway. no strings attached. except if you win anything, you get to win that thing. that's pretty much the only string attached. the string that connects you and winning together. yeah, that string.

also, below i've provided a helpful diagram i constructed in the event that some of you require visual aids to help understand the complicated inner-workings of the t-shirt contest. enjoy.
